The official fast was a great success with roughly 100 participants. But if you missed it don't despair! We encourage you to prayerfully conduct your own fast according to your own schedule at any time. Likewise, if you believe it would be unwise for you to participate in a fast (e.g., for medical reasons), we would still encourage you to download and read the study guide. Please feel free to use the above link to access our study guide. The primary purpose of this fast is to demonstrate that:

  1. We are willing to take self-sacrificial actions in order to make a statement that we value our liberty,
  2. We will remain non-violent,
  3. We honor and respect the methods used by previous nonviolent leaders who also practiced fasting, including Jesus, Gandhi, and Martin Luther King,
  4. We will actively meditate upon the task in front of us in order to prepare our minds for the tasks ahead, and
  5. We will beseech the Lord to protect our liberties that he gave us.

The duration of forty hours has been selected due to:

  1. Biblical significance of the number 40, which is frequently associated with a time of transition.
  2. The fact that it is a duration that is long enough to demonstrate serious commitment but does not result in major medical concerns for most people (however, we recognize that this is not an event for everyone - for example, if you are pregnant or have another medical condition that may cause problems, we strongly encourage you to support others and to selectively limit types of food that you consume rather than fully taking part in this event)

If you participate in this fast, I encourage you to join the Facebook group so that we can have an idea of the number of participants. Based on our feedback to date, the Facebook group membership represents roughly 50% of those who actually participate in the fast/study.
